I was back at Terrey Hills to Coach the “Thunderbirds” at the Princess Anne Arena today, and we had a terrific time. Four groups of disparate ages and abilities all braved the showery conditions to be part of training in dressage, poles and jumping. Some wet horses, some seriously gorgeous young horses and some heroic older horses. Well done everyone and congratulations to Rachel for once again organising it so brilliantly (even she can’t control the weather). I love my trips to the Thunderbirds and admire the enthusiasm and keenness for learning I always encounter. For those in my groups today I would recommend follow up training with George when he comes over to Terry Hills on a fairly regular basis- you can call him on 0431 212661. Equine Masterclass a success for HRC.
The Hawkesbury Riding Club has again partnered with the Hawkesbury City Council to stage its second Equine Masterclass at their Clarendon grounds on Sunday 30th October.
Chief organiser Greg Alladice, organised a wonderful line up of local professionals to present a range of interesting topics to educate and inform horse enthusiasts of a variety of ages and experiences.
The presenters included :
· Jon Ingersole Horse Dentist- How to check your horse’s teeth.
· Mark Rodney Horse Trainer- How to build trust with your horse.
· Elizabeth Mc Master NCAS Level 2 Coach- How to ride a dressage test.
· Emily Streckfuss BVsc -How to give first aid to your horse.
· Anthony Hatch -How to be safe around horses – emergency rescue services.
· George Johnson Professional Showjumper & Level 1 NCAS Coach-How to jump a clear round -

The day’s proceedings were opened by Ray Williams MP, the Member for Hawkesbury, and Councillor Kim Ford the Mayor of the Hawkesbury City Council.
Ray Williams, who has had a lifelong involvement himself with horses, reminded attendees of the importance of safety around horses and congratulated the Hawkesbury Riding Club on the Masterclass initiative to educate people about safe practices with horses in both their handling and riding.
Hawkesbury Riding Club President Wendy Pike said, “We are proud that our club has been offering training and education for horse enthusiasts for over thirty years. This Masterclass initiative epitomises the sort of things HRC offers to local horse enthusiasts and we are very grateful for the support of the Hawkesbury City Council and the efforts of Greg Alladice in organising this event.”
The club meets on the second and fourth Sundays of each month, at the club grounds – Gate 5, Hawkesbury Showground, Clarendon. Three sessions are usually held between 9.30am – 1.00pm. Sessions are run in nine different groups and riders may experience dressage, jumping cross country and other disciplines. Lectures, seminars and schools are also arranged along with social activities.

The Sydney Showjumping Club is gearing up for some first class showjumping at their End of Year Championships on 3rd 4th December.

Club President David Lawrence said, "This is the highlight of our year and the only two day competition we hold. We are expecting some of the best horse and riders in the country to attend and the grounds are in excellent order!"

Over the weekend there will be a comprehensive program for Juniors, Young Riders, Adults and Amateurs in heights from 70cm to the 1.50 Grand Prix. There will be four rings and a well-respected line up of course designers (Brad Longhurst, Sue Bettington, Bob Brooks, David Lawrence & Mark Atkins0 will ensure that good tracks are provided.

George is at Dubbo competing at the Australian Showjumping Championships with three horses and today had success with Sprite coming third in the very competitive 1.30m event, Cecil has qualified for the D grade Championships tomorrow and Ozy has been very brave in the 1.140m Senior Titles ring over the very big tracks.

The Sydney Showjumping Club will name the feature event of their upcoming Winter Championships in honour of one its most famous members, Di Dawson, who passed away earlier this year.
The Di Dawson Grand Prix will be the highlight of the day on Sunday 17th July at the Sydney Showjumping Club's Clarendon grounds.

How old is too old? Chrissie explains why riding is right for the mature aged rider

When it comes to trying something new, some sports make it easier to answer this question than others. On a professional level, gymnasts rarely make it into their thirties. The wear and tear of high intensity sports, such as basketball and swimming, are also deemed the domain of the younger generation.

Horse riding however can be quite a different story, particularly at an elite level. No one under thirty has ever won a gold medal in showjumping at the Olympic

Games. The Beijing Games are a great example of this. On the Australian team Laurie Lever competed well into his sixties, Canada’s Ian Miller was 61, while Japan’s Hiroshi Hoketsu at 67 gained over 70% in the dressage. Ina Knospe from Canberra broke her horse in at 69 and competed on the same horse at 75 at Prix St George. Klaus Balkenhol won team dressage gold at the Atlanta Olmpics at 58 and still rides and trains every day at Grand Prix level at 72. Our highest placed performer at the recent World Championships, Chris Chugg was 53, while George Sanna, our current Australian Champion is 59.

As well as attracting an older demographic, competitive riding is also the only sport that places men and women on an equal playing field. Abroad Meredith Michaels Beerbaum is just as competitive as her hugely successful

brother-in-law, while on our home soil Vicki Roycroft, now 58, has represented Australia in three Olympic Games and four World Championships.

So when considering taking up a new sport in your later years, Equestrian is a rewarding and fulfilling option for both men and women. In our own student ranks, we have several older inspirational riders. Sandra McClean is 64 and actively competing in showjumping and dressage. Murray Robertson at 65 still has regular weekly lessons and newcomer Bill Gibson at 70 is embracing a life’s ambitions to ride horses with weekly lessons.

If well- mounted and well-managed, the older student can safely take part in lessons or competition according to their capabilities. From a health perspective, riding is an aerobic exercise, promoting core strength, balance and flexibility. Additionally, horse riding can be an incredibly social sport and provide you with a network of likeminded and passionate enthusiasts.

Showjumping at Sydney Showjumping Club 6th March 2011

Showjumping was of a very high standard at Sydney Showjumping Club on Sunday 6th March with over 180 horses entered for the day.

Several members used the day as a final hit out for their trip to New Zealand at the end of the week to compete in the highly prestigious Horse of the Year Show at Napier in Hawke’s Bay.

George Sanna from Glossodia, the current Australian Showjumping Champion, heads the Australian team, along with Julia Hargreaves from Wilberforce, Brook Dobbin from Victoria, and Cathy Graham from Queensland.

Paul Athanasoff from Glossodia is team reserve and will compete as an individual. Danielle Butcher, Jamie Kermond and Jamie Winning will also compete as individuals. Good luck to all those riders.

Coordinators for the day were Sue Coonan and Karinda Alpert and both were delighted with the success of the day. Courses were designed by Mark Atkins and David Lawrence and despite recent hot and dry weather the grounds were in good condition.

Sydney Showjumping Club will hold their AGM on Tuesday 15th March and their next competition day on Sunday 20th March. Competitors are reminded that all entries must be made online through www.globalentriesonline.com.au

Christine and George Johnson of Johnson Equestrian Services at Nelson offers students a wide variety of training options to help you maximise your riding skills and enjoyment.

Christine, who is a Level 2 NCAS EFA accredited Coach and Assessor is supported in the training of horses and riders by son George, who is a Level 1 NCAS Coach.

At Johnson Equestrian headquarters a wide range of training options include a 70 x 30m all weather arena, equipped with a full set of showjumps and 4 metres of mirrors for rider position assessment and correction. Also a cross-country training course allows for an alternate training environment and an introduction of undulating terrain and most types of cross-country obstacles.

Students involved at Johnson Equestrian form a cheery support group for each other at training and competition. You can have lessons on your horse or one of ours. We can assist in sales and purchases to have you mounted on the horse to most suit your riding aims and abilities.

Regular Coach Training groups are held every Wednesday afternoon and monthly clinics are held at Clarendon and SIEC in showjumping and eventing.

The SSJC Committee were delighted with the success of their first competition day for 2011 at their Clarendon grounds, on Sunday 20th February.

Coordinator Karinda Alpert said, "This has been a fantastic start for our year. We have had good entries and the grounds are in wonderful condition! We are looking forward to a full and exciting year of competition and training at SSJC. Competitors are reminded that all entries are to be made through www.globalentriesonline.com.au ””

Courses were designed by SSJC life member & tireless worker, David Lawrence, and were flowing and all rode well. Judges were Bob Brook, Susan & Robert Nault and Joyce Brook.

Temperatures in the high 30s resulted in some red faced riders and sweaty horses but it was good to see riders & strappers employing good cooling strategies and the tree planting program of ten years ago is now starting to pay dividends, providing shady respite on the bank and borders of the warm up arenas.

It was great to see Chris Chugg of Glossodia back in action at SSJC after an eleven-month stint in Europe and USA competing on his spectacular warmblood stallion “Vivant”. Chris had a spectacularly successful tour and was the highest ever placed Australian rider at the World Cup Finals in Aachen and at the World Championships in Kentucky.

Vivant has sadly been sold but Chris is excited to begin campaigning his progeny. At the NSW EA Awards ceremony on Friday night Chris was recognised as NSWSJC’s Athlete of the Year and Vivant as the Horse of the Year!

In ring one, Verity Muscat and Annie Ignatovich dominated by winning two classes each. While in ring two eventers, Christine Bates, George Sheridan, Sam Lyle and Chris Burton dominated, with many big teams of showjumpers absent on the day due to the clashing with the Maitland Country SJ Championships.

Showjumping resumes at SSJC next month with a Training Day on 6th March and a competition day on 20th March. All entries are to be made through www.globalentriesonline.com.au

Attention Horse enthusiasts! At last our latest Team J Newsletter is out. Many thanks to Alice and Ben for their editorial efforts.

We have had an interlude in proceedings at Team J, as many of you are aware, due to Grandad (My Dad) passing away. We are back in full swing now and George is also available to travel to do clinics or lessons, as well as taking horses for schooling or competition education or sales preparation.

Coach training is on again every Wednesday from 10am to 2pm and our Friday afternoon vaulting group is up and running from 2 to 4 pm.

We have had an interlude in proceedings at Team J, as many of you are aware, due to Grandad (My Dad) passing away. We are back in full swing now and George is also available to travel to do clinics or lessons, as well as taking horses for schooling or competition education or sales preparation.

Coach training is on again every Wednesday from 10am to 2pm and our Friday afternoon vaulting group is up and running from 2 to 4 pm.

Farewell Grandad, Dad, John. 1932 - 2011

It is our very sad duty to inform you that Dad passed away peacefully this morning (Friday 4th Feb) at Norwest Hospital.He had fought a valiant battle against bowel cancer, that cruelly marched on to his liver, lungs and spine. He tried all avenues of treatment with bravery & optimism and in his typical fashion was always concerned more with others than himself.

He was dignified and brave and grateful to the end, always thanking nurses and doctors for everything they did for him.His funeral will be held next Wed 9th February at 11am at the Castlebrook Memorial Park at Rouse Hill, and afterwards at the Box Hill Progress Association Hall at Nelson for some sandwiches and a cup of tea.

Our family invites those who loved and respected him to join us there, but understand fully those who can't make it. We would ask that there be no flowers but donations be made to the cancer council for cancer research.

Christine is an experienced EA NCAS Level 2 Coach and Coach Educator and has competed and taught showjumping, eventing and dressage at all levels. Christine also offers weekly Coach Training sessions for trainees working towards their EA Horse Management, Riding & Coaching Cerificates and Accreditation. Having taught Horse Management to Diploma level in the NSW TAFE system and for five years at Marcus Oldham College in Victoria, Christine has a sound background in Horse husbandry and Business Management to compliment her practical riding and coaching skills. Christine is a member of the NSW PCA’s paid instructors panel and is a member of the NSW NCAS Advisory panel. Showjumping January 2011

US super coach George Morris is visiting Australia once again to teach our very best jumping and eventing riders in January. Clinic dates are 14th to 16th January indoors at SIEC, and 18th to 20th January outdoors on grass at Mount White. Also a 2-day Clinic in Victoria on 22nd and 23rd January at Adam Wootten's. Spaces are now very limited in the Rider Clinics, but spectators are welcome at $30 per day. Session times are 8am til 10am for the 1.40 group, 10.15 til 12.15 for the 1.25 group. Then either 2 til 4, or 3 til 5 (depending on the heat) for the 1.15 group.

Spectators will receive a wealth of knowledge from this man whose career has spanned 50 years of success in both riding (Olympic Silver Medal, Grand Prixs of Aachen and Spruce Meadows, countless Nations' Cups) and coaching, most recently the last two Gold Medal winning US Olympic Teams. He is also the author of several highly regarded books, and is a clear,articulate communicator that loves having an audience, due to a past life in the theatre!

George and Ozbred in the World Cup at SIEC performed very well. George has trained Ozy since he was retired from racing 5yrs ago. As a racehorse he was trained by Wade and Doreen Slinkard of Wilberforce, he was bred by Chris Lawlor -owner and Managing Director of International Animal Health. George is a Level 1 EA Coach who is available for private or group lessons and he is able to take horses for schooling & competition. George is a member of the Pony Club paid instructors panel. Record entries, interstate guests, high profile riders and some exciting new sponsors have the Sydney Showjumping Club on track to run the biggest event on the years calender, the Sydney Jumping Championships on 4th and 5th December 2010 at their Clarendon grounds.

The wettest spring and start to summer in over a decade is playing havoc with the club’s plans however, and Club President, David Lawrence said today, “ At this point we are still running, and will do so unless the ground become "dangerous".
